\nAfter the fall of the Berlin wall, Sime\u00e3o II, who had never lost hope, returned to his country, fifty years after being forced to abandon it. The acclaimed return to Sofia in May 1996 was followed by his political participation, culminating in the victory of the movement he led in the 2001 legislative elections.
\nSime\u00e3o II is a unique case in history: deposed monarch, he managed to return to power, no longer as king in a monarchy, but as head of a republican democratic government.
