Description
In 2009, the year of Fado’s candidacy as a world heritage, the book Fado Marialva was published; it is a work that represents an ode to Fado and Festa Brava. It consists of about 500 pages with four hundred unpublished documents in 4 colours, illustrating the history of each of the Fados described. All of them have a story that indicates the poets, composers, performers, editors and figures of the Festa Brava that inspired them. It is possible to find in this book many important people’s names connected with Fado, such as Severa, Conde Vimioso, Alfredo Marceneiro, Carlos Ramos, Amália Rodrigues, Hermínia Silva and many others. Among the poets, D. Maria Manuel Cid, D. Teresa Grave or Carlos Conde are some of the most remarkable ones. Ribatejo and Campino, the bull and the horse, are the basis of the entire book, with the author’s concern to place them in Portuguese culture and traditions, where composers such as Frederico Valério, João Nobre, Jaime Santos, José Fontes Rocha, Armandino, José Marques do Amaral, Ricardo Rocha or Custódio Castelo, Miguel Ramos or Martinho D´Assunção Júnior, play an important role in the history of Fado, whether they were bullfighters or not. Cities like Lisbon, Santarém, Vila Franca de Xira or Alcochete are cited as a source of inspiration for poets, singing and celebrating them as no one else has. The book Fado Marialva is an unprecedented work that corresponds to almost three hundred Fados whose theme is the Festa Brava.
