Carlos Calvet

Architect and painter. Despite his initial training in architecture, his interest in painting clearly overlapped in his artistic career. He began to exhibit his paintings in 1947, and in parallel he devoted himself to photography with greater intensity between 1956 and 1975. However, his career as a painter was affirmed at the expense of photography, which he gradually abandoned as his main artistic expression. In the late 1940s and early 1950s, he was connected with the Surrealist Movement, developing film projects with Mário Cesariny and António Areal. He also participated in some editions of the General Exhibitions of Plastic Arts, as opposed to the official aesthetics of the Novo State regime. In 1989, he had his first exhibition of his photographic work at Galeria Ether, showing his production between the 50s and 70s. His artistic career continues through painting, having regular exhibitions, and it has been exhibited in several national and international collections.
